Retro Video Of The Week

In the land of North Carolina, College Basketball is a religion. Duke, N. Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest (The Big Four) are all rich with tradition and hold over 10 National titles between them. I'm an NC State University grad, and my blood is red, pulling relentlessly for the Wolfpack.

but I also grew up in Rocky Mount, NC home of the legendary Phil Ford who played at Carolina in the late 70's. You have to have lived in Rocky Mount in the 70's to understand how important and inspiring Ford was to everyone in that town. He was the Michael Jordan of our childhood. Even though I ended up going to rival NC State and by blood we are supposed to hate Carolina, that doesnt count with Ford. He's a legend.

Tyler Hansborough passed Ford this week to be the all-time scoring leader in the history of UNC Basketball, quite an accomplishment, so I wanted to make this week's Retro video, the final video of the year for 2008 a throwback to the great Phil Ford.

Concerto For Constantine

Mark Greaney from JJ72 has a new band that I had the honor of seeing in Germany during Popkomm 2008. This is a live clip of the band performing at Whelan's in Dublin. Features Gavin Fox (Idlewild) on bass and Binzer (Gemma Hayes) on drums.

Retro Video Of The Week (Double Shot!)

as a tribute to my new friend, Mark Greaney, not-so-retro but good enough (from the 90's) his former band JJ72

Retro Video Of The Week

Sorry for the long delay between posts! I am sure you were waiting with baited breathe. I was traveling with Gemma Hayes for a week long east coast tour, two shows opening for My Bloody Valentine, and then was in Ireland and Germany for a week. To set the moment and cherish the shots of Whiskey I had, here's a good one from the POGUES

Retro Video Of The Week: RIP Jerry Reed

Actor/Singer Jerry Reed passed away this past week, and I felt it would be fitting to make my Retro Video of the Week pick "East Bound and Down" also above is a picture of Jerry that was taken by Tor and myself when Jerry visited Redeye two or so years ago and we had him hold up a copy of the Supersuckers CD where they cover East Bound and Down.. they were huge fans and also pay tribute on their website to Jerry's passing. RIP.

by: JOHN GEROME (Associated Press Writer)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Jerry Reed, a singer who appeared in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, has died of complications from emphysema at age 71, his longtime booking agent said Tuesday.

Carrie Moore-Reed, who is no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday morning.

Reed was a gifted guitarist who later became a songwriter, singer and actor.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, he had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "East Bound and Down," and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, "Gator" "Hot Stuff" and "High-Ballin'."

My Bloody Valentine = Religion

Carrie and I were fortunate enough to have front row seats to My Bloody Valentine's first performance in Ireland in over 15 years this past weekend at the Electric Picnic. This is not the video I took however it's from an earlier show in London almost EXACTLY the spot that Carrie and I were standing and more or less captures what it was like.. except with ear plugs of course!

also posting the video for Only Shallow (same song)
genius I tell you, pure genius Mr Kevin Shields on guitar.. after 17 years it was worth the wait!
cannot wait to see them again at the ATP Festival on Sept 21st with Gemma Hayes..

@U2, the best place for your news

if you want to keep up with the latest on anything related to U2, you can never go wrong with my friends @U2.com.

as someone who has been a fan of the band since 1982, I can assure you their news stories are informative, classy, prompt and complete. While other sites may post rumors, @U2 like true journalists, will cover their tracks and facts and post from reliable sources. They have the trust and respect of most hard-core fans and never compromise their integrity by lowering their standards to write like a tabloid magazine might, just trying to get a candid and rude picture of the band invading their privacy.

it's no wonder Hot Press Magazine (Ireland version of Rolling Stone) readers picked @U2.com the top fan site on the internet (not just U2 but all bands).

the one thing I wish they would do is have a good comprehensive list of U2 collectables, promotional goods and rarities for fans.
and also (this is my selfish side) post more stories about U2 fans out there who have blogs (like me!) where fans can learn about other bands maybe related to U2 (like Hothouse Flowers, Daniel Lanois, Maria McKee) or just music in general.. there is a great network of music fans out there and not all of it is about U2 only but the spirit revolves around U2.. and it would be nice to help each other out by posting links for each other (maybe they do this and I just dont know) but regardless, they deserve my "two thumbs up" and I am giving it to them here. maybe they can return the love :) (and yeah sure they are giving away some free CDs so why not really embellish!) or if not maybe more video, with the invention of You Tube there is a lot of great rare things out there but a bunch of crap to sort through.

and take a poll how many fans have heard of "Womanfish"? :)

and I always have to finish with a video.. what else, but the uber-rare and still not part of the Joshua Tree b-side sessions
"Womanfish" live on RTE circa 1986

You know you're a mega star..

if there was ever any doubt that Feist is massive, that can now be put to rest. This is pretty classic, especially considering the chickens (always my favorites as a child) come in at the end to cluck to the beat..

Feist on Sesame Street..

RIP Jerry Wexler

We're sad to hear of the passing of one of the godfathers of the music industry, Jerry Wexler.. RIP.

NEW YORK, NY --
Legendary record producer Jerry Wexler, who helped shape R&B music with influential recordings of Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and other greats, has died, says his co-author, David Ritz. He was 91.

Ritz, co-author of Wexler’s 1993 memoir, “Rhythm and the Blues,” said he died at his Sarasota, Fla., home at about 3:45 a.m. Friday. He had been ill for a couple of years with congenital heart disease.

Wexler earned his reputation as a music industry giant while a partner at Atlantic Records.

Atlantic provided an outlet for the groundbreaking work of African-American performers in the 1950s and ‘60s. Later, it provided a home
